Summer Art & Music Program 2006

Summerfest Concert Band--under the direction of Mr. Brett Wery.  For youth entering grade 6 (with one year of band) through adults.  Let's make this the biggest summer band we've ever had--from the flutes to the tubas, percussion to clarinets, trumpets to French horns--and let's catch a bassoon and a couple of oboes, too!  We want you all!  Come, join the band as we interpret this year's playful theme through concert band music.  Learn from a top concert band instructor as Mr. Wery arrives on the Montgomery County music scene ready to lead you to excellence!  Be sure to have a few friends sign up with you!  It'll be a great summer! Donation: $20

Jazz Mini-Camp--under the direction of Dr. William Meckley.  For youth entering grades 9 through adults.  Instruction in the four styles of jazz from this talented and dedicated jazz artist and educator will put you on track to a great summer of music fun!  Limited in scope, the Sizzlin' Summer Jazz Ensemble will focus on excellence in performance, exploration in improvisation for those who wish to try it, and solo development.  Come ready to learn to play your instrument better than you ever thought you could!  Donation: $30

Meet the Conductors

BRETT WERY is a professor at Schenectady County Community College where he is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching as well as the SCCC Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching. He conducts the SCCC Wind Ensemble and instructs in woodwind applied studies, chamber music, music theory, and conducting. In addition to his duties at SCCC, Mr. Wery is the Principal Conductor of the Capital Region Wind Ensemble the conductor of the University at Albany Orchestra as well as an active composer and arranger.  He performs regularly with the Empire Jazz Orchestra and has performed with Albany, Catskill, Berkshire, Schenectady, Utica, and Vermont Symphonies and the St. Cecilia Chamber Orchestra. He records with the Empire Jazz Orchestra, the Albany Symphony, and the Dogs of Desire. His American musical theater experience includes numerous national tours including Annie and 42nd Street; performances as a member of the Westchester Broadway Theatre Orchestra; and performances with Rosemary Clooney, Tommy Tune, and Mitzi Gaynor. Mr. Wery received his M.A. from the University of Denver and his Bachelor of Music degree from the North Carolina School of the Arts.

WILLIAM MECKLEY is a professor at Schenectady County Community College where he chairs the music department. He is the Director of Jazz Ensemble and the Music Director of the Empire Jazz Orchestra. He studied trombone with Reginald Fink and George Osborn. Dr. Meckley received his Ph.D., from the Eastman School of Music; M.M., Ohio University; and B.A., Fairmont State College.  His professional performances include Aretha Franklin, Yes, The Manhattan Transfer, Burt Bacharach, Roger Daltrey and John Entwhistle, Rosemary Clooney, Johnny Mathis, Nick Brignola, St. Cecilia Chamber Orchestra, Albany Pro Musica, Albany, Schenectady, Catskill, Utica Symphonies, Alex Torres and The Latin Kings Orchestra, Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Doug Sertl Big Band, George Burns, Carol Channing, Mitzi Gaynor, Andy Williams, Schenectady Brass Quintet, Albany Symphony Brass Quintet, Mosiev Dance Company of the USSR.  In addition, he has performed with numerous national Broadway and other tours (Proctors Theatre). Professional tour performances in Europe, Canada, Jordan. Recordings with the Empire Jazz Orchestra, Albany Symphony, Alex Torres and the Latin Kings Orchestra. Performance faculty, Skidmore College, SUNY Albany. SCCC Foundation and State University of New York Chancellors' Awards for Excellence in Teaching, Albany/Schenectady League of the Arts Award, 1997. State University Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, 2005.
